A Beginner's Guide to Online Shopping
Online shopping means you can buy almost anything without leaving your home — groceries, gifts, clothes, books, and more. If you've never done it before, it's easier than you think.
What You'll Need
- A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access
- A debit or credit card (or a prepaid card for extra safety)
- A delivery address (your home or a family member's)
Step 1: Choose a Trusted Website
Stick with well-known stores to start. Great options for beginners include Amazon.ca, Walmart.ca, Canadian Tire, and Costco. These sites are secure and have good return policies.
Step 2: Search for What You Want
Use the search bar at the top of the page. Type what you're looking for (like "bird feeder" or "warm slippers") and press Enter. You'll see a list of results with photos and prices.
Step 3: Add to Cart
Found something you like? Click on it to see the details, then click the Add to Cart or Buy Now button. The "cart" is like a virtual shopping basket. You can keep shopping or click Checkout when you're ready.
Step 4: Checkout
This is where you enter your address and payment information. Look for the padlock icon (🔒) in the web address bar — it means your information is secure. Enter your address carefully, then enter your card number and click Place Order.
Step 5: Track Your Package
After you order, you'll get a confirmation email. Most stores also send tracking information so you can see where your package is and when it will arrive.
Shopping Safety Tips
- Only shop on websites that start with https:// (the 's' means secure)
- Use a credit card for better fraud protection
- Never shop on public Wi-Fi (like at a coffee shop)
- If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is
