How to Use Google Maps to Get Around

Google Maps is like having a friendly navigator in your pocket. It shows you where you are, how to get where you're going, and even how busy a restaurant is before you visit.

    Getting Started

Google Maps is free and comes pre-installed on most phones. On a computer, go to maps.google.com. The first thing you'll see is a map of your area — you can drag it around with your finger or mouse to explore.

    Finding an Address

Tap the search bar at the top and type an address or place name — like "120 Sparks Street Ottawa" or "Loblaws Barrhaven." Google Maps will show you exactly where it is on the map.

    Getting Directions

Once you've found your destination, tap the Directions button. Maps will show you three options:

    • 🚗 Drive — step-by-step driving directions with traffic updates
    • 🚌 Transit — bus and train routes with schedules
    • 🚶 Walk — walking paths and estimated time

Tap the one you want, and Google Maps will guide you with spoken turn-by-turn instructions.

    Using the Voice Feature

While driving, tap the microphone icon and say something like, "Navigate to 120 Sparks Street" or "Find coffee shops near me." Google Maps will do the rest. It reads directions aloud so you can keep your eyes on the road.

    Other Handy Features

    • Save your home address — tap "Set home or work" so you can navigate home with one tap
    • Explore nearby — search for "restaurants," "pharmacies," or "gas stations" to find what's close
    • Share your location — let family members see where you are in real time (useful if you're meeting up)
    • Check business hours — tap any restaurant or store to see when it opens and closes
