iPad Basics: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

The iPad is one of the most popular devices for seniors — it's lightweight, the screen is large enough to see clearly, and it's surprisingly easy to use once you know the basics.

    Turning It On and Off

To turn on your iPad, press and hold the top button (the one on the right edge) until the Apple logo appears. To turn it off, hold the same button and either volume button until you see a slider — drag it to power off.

    The Home Screen

The home screen is where all your apps live. Each icon is an app — tap one to open it. To return to the home screen from any app, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (on newer iPads) or press the home button (on older models).

    Adjust the Text Size

If text looks too small, make it bigger:

    1. Open Settings (the grey gear icon)
    2. Tap Display & Brightness
    3. Tap Text Size
    4. Drag the slider to the right to make text larger

    Downloading Apps

The App Store is where you get new apps. Tap the blue App Store icon, search for what you want (like "Zoom" or "WhatsApp"), and tap Get. You may need to enter your Apple ID password or use Face ID to confirm.

    Useful iPad Tips

    • Battery life: The iPad battery lasts all day. Charge it overnight.
    • Wi-Fi: Go to Settings → Wi-Fi to connect to your home internet.
    • Volume: Use the buttons on the right side to adjust sound.
    • Keyboard: The on-screen keyboard appears when you tap a text field. You can also connect a Bluetooth keyboard if you prefer typing with keys.

If you get stuck, remember: you can't break anything by tapping around. The iPad is designed to be explored!
