Organize Your Digital Photos in 30 Minutes

Digital photos are wonderful — but they can quickly become overwhelming. If your photo library feels like a messy drawer, you're not alone. Here's a simple 30-minute system to bring order to your memories.

    Step 1: Pick One Place

The golden rule: use one app to store all your photos. On a Mac, that's the Photos app. On a PC, it might be Google Photos or the default Windows Photos app. Pick one and stick with it — don't scatter photos across your desktop, Downloads folder, and email attachments.

Step 2: Create Albums (Not Folders)

Albums are like digital photo albums you can flip through. Create a few simple categories:

    • Family — photos of kids, grandkids, siblings
    • Travel — vacations and day trips
    • Holidays — Christmas, birthdays, celebrations
    • Pets — because they deserve their own album

In the Mac Photos app, click File → New Album, give it a name, and drag photos in. That's it!

    Step 3: Delete the Duplicates

We all take multiple shots of the same moment. Keep the best one and delete the rest. On a Mac, go to Photos → File → Show Duplicate Items — the app will find them for you.

Step 4: Use the "Favorites" Feature

Mark your absolute favourite photos (click the heart icon). This creates a smart album that always shows your best shots — great for showing friends or making a photo book later.

Step 5: Back Up Your Photos

Photos are irreplaceable. Make sure they're backed up:

    • iCloud Photos — automatically syncs your photos to the cloud. On a Mac, go to System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Photos.
    • Google Photos — free backup for high-quality photos, works on any device.
    • USB drive or external hard drive — plug it in, copy your Photos library over once a month.

Spend 30 minutes on this system once, and you'll never lose track of a precious memory again.
