5 Simple Tips to Stay Safe Online
The internet is an amazing place — connecting us with family, helping us learn new things, and making everyday tasks easier. But it can also feel a little intimidating when you hear about scams and hackers.
The good news? You don't need to be a tech expert to stay safe. Here are five simple tips that make a big difference.
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Avoid using the same password for everything. Think of passwords like keys — you wouldn't use the same key for your house, your car, and your mailbox. If a password is hard to remember, try a passphrase — a short sentence like "MyCatLovesSunnyDays!"
2. Watch Out for Suspicious Emails
If an email asks for your password, credit card number, or personal details, be suspicious. Legitimate companies (your bank, Canada Post, your phone provider) will never ask for sensitive information by email. When in doubt, call them directly using a phone number you trust.
3. Keep Your Devices Updated
Those update notifications can be annoying — but they fix security holes that bad actors might use. Set your phone and computer to update automatically so you don't have to think about it. On a Mac, go to System Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates.
4. Think Before You Click
If something sounds too good to be true ("You won a free iPhone!" or "Click here to claim your refund"), it probably is a scam. Take a breath, close the window, and if you're curious, ask a family member or your MacBryte coach about it.
5. Use Two-Factor Authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to your accounts. Even if someone guesses your password, they can't get in without the code sent to your phone. Most email providers, banks, and social media sites offer this — and it's easy to set up.
