How to Video Call Your Grandkids (Step by Step)
Video calling is one of the best parts of modern technology. It lets you see your grandchildren's smiles, watch them open birthday presents, or just wave hello — even when you're miles apart.
Here's everything you need to know, step by step.
What You'll Need
- A computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera (most have one built in)
- An internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
- A free video calling app — your family can help you pick one
Step 1: Choose an App
The most popular options are:
- FaceTime — Built into every iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If your family uses Apple devices, this is the easiest option. No sign-up needed.
- Zoom — Works on any device. Your family can send you a link; you just click it to join. Free for one-on-one calls.
- WhatsApp — Great if your family already uses it for messaging. Video calls work the same way as a voice call.
- Facebook Messenger — If you're on Facebook, this is already installed in the app.
Step 2: Get Set Up
Ask a family member to help you install the app before your first call. Once it's set up, the hardest part is done! Most apps will ask for permission to use your camera and microphone — tap "Allow" and you're good to go.
Step 3: Make Your First Call
On most apps, you just tap the person's name and then tap the video camera icon. On Zoom, your family sends you a link — click it and the app opens automatically.
Pro Tips
- Place your device on a stable surface so the picture isn't shaky
- Make sure you're in a well-lit room (face a window if you can)
- Speak at a normal volume — the microphone will pick you up
- Don't worry about being "camera ready" — your grandchildren just want to see you!
