Zoom vs. FaceTime vs. WhatsApp: Which Video Call App Should You Use?
Video calling has become one of the most important ways to stay connected with family and friends. But with so many options — Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype — it can be confusing to know which one to use. Here's a simple breakdown.
FaceTime — Best for Apple Users
Best for: Calling family members who also have iPhones, iPads, or Macs
FaceTime is built into every Apple device — no download required. Just open the FaceTime app, tap a contact's name, and tap the video camera button. The call connects instantly.
Pros: No account setup, works automatically, excellent video quality, end-to-end encrypted
Cons: Only works between Apple devices. If your grandkids have Android phones, you'll need something else.
Zoom — Best for Group Calls and Classes
Best for: Family group calls, online classes, or calls where you need to share your screen
Zoom works on any computer, tablet, or phone. Someone sends you a link; you click it and you're in. The free version lets you make one-on-one calls for as long as you like.
Pros: Works on any device, easy to join (just click a link), great for group calls
Cons: Free calls with 3+ people are limited to 40 minutes; requires a download on computers
WhatsApp — Best for Existing Chats
Best for: Regular texting families who want to switch to a video call quickly
If your family already uses WhatsApp for messaging, video calling is just a tap away. Open a chat, tap the video camera icon at the top, and you're connected.
Pros: Works on any phone, end-to-end encrypted, no separate account needed if you already use WhatsApp
Cons: Requires a smartphone (not ideal for computers without a phone)
Our Recommendation
If everyone uses Apple devices: use FaceTime. If your family is mixed (Apple and Android): use Zoom or WhatsApp. Any of these three will let you see those smiling faces — and that's what really matters.
