Getting Started with Email

Email lets you send messages, photos, and documents to anyone β€” instantly and free.

What You'll Learn
Step 1: Open Your Email
On a Computer

Open Chrome, Safari, or Edge. Go to gmail.com or outlook.com. Type your email and password, click Sign In.

On iPad or iPhone

Open the Mail app (envelope icon). If not set up, go to Settings β†’ Mail β†’ Accounts β†’ Add Account.

Step 2: Your Inbox

New unread emails are bold with a blue dot. Read ones appear normal. Click any email to open it.

Step 3: Reply

Click the Reply button (curved arrow). Type your message, click Send.

Step 4: Write a New Email

Click Compose. Fill in To (the address), Subject (a title), and the message. Click Send.

Step 5: Send a Photo

Click Compose. Click the paperclip πŸ“Ž. Find and select your photo. Click Open. Write your message and send.

  1. Go to gmail.com β†’ Create account
  2. Fill in your name, choose a username, create a password
  3. Follow the remaining steps and click Create Account

Go to zoom.us to download, or search "Zoom" in the App Store.

Join

Click the Zoom link someone sent you. Click Join Meeting. Choose Join with Video and Join with Audio.

Tips
⚠️ Only join calls from people you know. Don't click random Zoom links.

Staying Safe from Online Scams

⚠️ Golden Rule: Never give out your password, banking details, or SIN to anyone who contacts you. Hang up or delete the message.
The "Your Computer Has a Virus" Phone Scam

Someone calls claiming to be from Microsoft. This is always a scam. Microsoft does NOT call people. Hang up immediately.

Online Banking & Shopping Safely

What You'll Learn
Getting Started

Go to your bank's website (e.g., rbc.com, td.com). Click Register. You'll need your bank card number. Create a username and password different from your email.

Check Your Balance

Sign in. You'll see your accounts summary. Click an account to see recent transactions. Always click Sign Out when done.

Pay a Bill

Look for Pay Bills. Add the company name. Enter your account number. Enter the amount and date. Confirm.

Send Money (e-Transfer)

Find Interac e-Transfer. Enter the amount and recipient's email. Create a security question and tell the answer separately. Click Send.

Privacy Settings

iCloud (Apple Users)

Check storage: Settings β†’ Your Name β†’ iCloud. Backup: Settings β†’ Your Name β†’ iCloud β†’ iCloud Backup β†’ ON. Backs up nightly when plugged in on Wi-Fi.

Google Drive (Any Device)

Go to drive.google.com. Sign in with your Gmail. Click + to upload files. Create folders to organise.

Share a File

Right-click a file β†’ Share. Type the person's email. Choose View or Edit. Click Send.

Medication Reminders

iPhone Health app: Open Health ❀️ β†’ Browse β†’ Medications β†’ Add Medication. Set the name, dosage, and time. Your phone reminds you daily.

Reminders app: Open Reminders βœ“ β†’ + New Reminder. Type "Take medication." Tap the i icon, set a time, repeat daily.

Track Your Steps

Your iPhone counts steps automatically. Open the Health app to see your daily step count.

Virtual Doctor's Visits
  1. Ask your doctor if they offer virtual appointments
  2. They'll send a Zoom link by email or text
  3. At your appointment time, tap the link
